SOUTHEAST TEXAS ARCHEOLOGY
CENTRAL ZONE

The central zone includes the counties of Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Montgomery, and Walker counties. Galveston and Harris include areas of coastal margin. The vegetation zones in this area are: marshland, grassland, and pine forest. More archeological research has been done in the central zone than the other two. Nearly 50,000 Goose Creek Plain sherds have been recovered in the central zone, 35,000 from the western and eastern zones combined.

Radiocarbon dates for occupation in the central zone ranges from 150 to 2450 YBP in the coastal margin, 130 to 6660 YBP for inland sites.
