What are the membership requirements?
The only requirement for HAS membership is an interest in archeology. Our members include professional archeologists, educators, and absolute amateurs.
What tools/equipment do I need on a dig?
You'll need whatever you use for any outdoor activity - water, snacks, bug repellent, sun screen, gloves and hat. Don't forget your trowel. Available at any hardware/home improvement store for about $5. For your first few expeditions, you really don't need anything else. Experience will tell you what you should add to your kit.
Where do we dig?
Our fieldwork takes us to Harris, and all the surrounding counties. For security reasons, we don't publicize the location of the site. We do publicize a public place where we all join up to caravan to the site. This website posts all fieldwork related information.
We normally dig only on Saturdays. We meet at 9am and work no later than 2pm.
How do I join?
Feel free to join at any monthly meeting; we always have application forms available. You can also print this Membership Application, fill it out, and mail with a check to the address on the application. top
Where is the monthly meeting?
M.D. Anderson Hall (Building 20) on the University of St. Thomas campus(map), 3900 Mt. Vernon.
I can't find the HAS Library!
Our library is co-located with St. Thomas' McAgy Archaeology Library in the Little Archaeology Gallery, 3907 Yoakum (Building 5) (map). It is set back from the street, and not well marked. It is attached to the north side of the Hughes House. top
What goes on at the monthly meeting?
A little before 7pm on the meeting night, a member arrives to prepare the refreshments table. What's a meeting without coffee? The meeting proper begins at 7:30 pm. The HAS president opens the meeting with a few remarks. A formal presentation follows, by a member of the professional archeology community. After a 15 minute refreshments break, the membership gathers for a brief business meeting. The monthly meeting normally adjourns by 9:30pm. top
Who keeps the stuff we find on a dig?
According to Texas law, all artifacts are the property of the landowner. After the artifacts are recovered, cleaned, catalogued, and analyzed, HAS returns them (all of them) to the landowner.
